Church History
Farmington Church of Christ was organized in 1904. Some of the charter members had been attending the Antioch Church; however, because of the length of travel, especially in bad weather, a new congregation was formed.
Fifteen original members are listed in the record book: Mr. Tray Jenkins, Mr. Claude Jenkins, Mr. Tommie Colley, Mr. James A. Pryor, Mr. J.B. Hall, Mr. Oury Harris, Mrs. E.C. Giles, Mrs. Nick Cloys, Miss Maggie Legate, Miss Lillie Colley, Mr. M.F. Cloys, Mr. Rollie W. Giles, Mr. J.B. Warren, Mr. B.J. Colley and Mrs. Effie Colley.
No real mention is made of a church building until 1908, when Mrs. V.L. Colley deeded property to “T.M. Nimmo, A.B. Colley, and H.B. Jenkins, Elders of the Church of Christ at Farmington Kentucky of Graves County…” The deed also refers to the church as the Christian Church.
It is unclear when the church began to call itself the “Farmington Church of Christ.” In 1922, it was still referred to as the Farmington Christian Church. On September 13, 1931, the record book has an “Official Membership of Church of Christ at Farmington, Kentucky.” In 1931, there were 199 members of the church listed.
According to the History of Farmington Kentucky and History of Farmington Schools by Pearle L. Hendley, A.L. Wilson and J.B. Hardeman of the Church of Christ were school principals as well as ministers. Other ministers were R.R. Brooks, T.G. Curd, W.W. Heflin, Charles Houser, L.R. Pogue, L.L. Brigance, Boone Douthit, Fred Chunn, and Alonzo Williams. The first “full-time” preacher was Alonzo Williams, who began in 1944 or 1945. Preachers following Williams were Lake Riley, James Shockley, Steve Waller, Giles Hester, Jerry Hoover, Gerald Ellison, Harvey Elder, Jerry Mayes, Stan Colley, John Curtis, Mike Ray, Amos Allen, and present minister, B.J. Gensic.
The record book does not list elder, but the following list has been made with help from members and earlier directories: 1904-1930’s, T.M. Nimmo, A.B. Colley, H.B. Jenkins, W.C. Gray; 1930’s-1959, A.L. Colley, Jim Warren, Jim Thompson, Earl Adair, Bernard Hall; 1690-1977, Sam Johnson, Barber Boyd, Nelson Adair, Fred Bennett, Roger Hall; 1977-1994, Sam Johnson Jr., Jimmy Wood, Fred Bennett, Ray Jones, Larry Colley; 1994, Sam Johnson Jr., Jimmy Wood. The church is presently led by a committee comprised of David Driver, John Hale, Doran Harrison, Jerry Mayes, Barry Newsome, Don Riley, Donald Smith, and Todd Templeton.
In 1961, the congregation moved from the original wooden structure to a new brick building on the same property. In 1984, the building was updated with a new front added. In 2002, a fellowship building was constructed behind the church building. Renovations to the auditorium and foyer were completed in 2008.
